Known Scales

This section presents musical scales which have been known through all ages and cultures.

• Some of theses scales are used for regional/ethnic type of music, such as Gypsy, Hungarian, Spanish, Japanese or Pelog Pentatonics;
• other scales form the basics of Western classical music, such as the Harmonic, Melodic, and, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian modes of the Major (Ionian) scale;
• still others are more recent in history, and very popular amongst jazz and rock music styles, such as the Bebop, and the Blues scales;
• furthermore, some scales are well-known for their experimental value, and produce exotic sounds such as the Prometeus, Scriabin Sonata, and Whole-tone scales.
